SIMON TAKES THE 125cc WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AT PHILLIP ISLAND

The rain clouds that hovered above the Phillip Island circuit cleared as the lights went out to mark the start of Australian 125cc Grand Prix, it was Pol Espargaro who led the field on the first lap followed closely by Nico Terol, Bradley Smith and Simone Corsi.

By lap four Pol Espargaro and Corsi led the field, a trend which continued until the half way point of the race. On lap eight Bradley Smith was able to move into third position and only two laps after he was able to pass Espargaro and Corsi to take the lead. Julian Simon who sat behind the leading group for most of the race made a charge on lap thirteen to take second position.

For the remainder of the race the two Bancaja Aspar Aprilia riders tried to prove their dominance by swapping positions, and with four laps to go Smith and Simon were able to build a one second gap over the following group. Simon made his final charge on Smith on the last lap, successfully passing him and crossing the line to taking victory at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and his first 125cc World Championship. Smith crossed the line behind his team mate followed closely by Sandro Cortese. Rounding out the top ten was Espargaro, Corsi, Terol, Efren Vazquez, Andrea Iannone, Marc Marquez and Sergio Gadea.
Simon’s championship marks the first in his career and 35th world championship for Aprilia.
