The second round of the Italian Supermoto Championship at Latina. On the track in Lazio, the twins from Noale represented the majority of the motorcycles participating in the S1, S2,and S5 classes of the Italian championship. In fact, 9 of the 32 motorcycles competing on Saturday in the S1, 9 of 23 in the S2, and 7 of 19 in the S5 were Aprilia SXVs, a total of 25 twins competing for the Italian championship in which 11 different brands are present.
In the S1 qualifications, Ivan Lazzarini (Aprilia SXV 4.5) was the fastest rider atop a twin with a 3rd place finish for Team DRC. Thierry Van Den Bosch (Aprilia SXV 4.5) finished 6th.
It was the pole position for Christian Iddon in the S2 (with an Aprilia SXV 5.5 of Team PMR H20), who is awaiting the start of the British championships. He took advantage of the race in Latina to conduct tests with teammate Luca Minutilli (Aprilia SXV 5.5), 5th. Among the significant performances was the 7th place finish by Massimo Beltrami atop an Aprilia SXV 5.5 of Team DRC.
S1 Class. The start of Race 1 saw Lazzarini immediately move into 2nd place behind Frenchman Adrien Chareyre (Husqvarna). Lazzarini maintained the position for 12 of the 14 laps before ceding to fellow Aprilia rider Van Den Bosch, who made a great comeback from 6th place in the grid. The heat victory went to Chareyre who finished ahead of Van den Bosch and Lazzarini, the leading rider in the Italian championship.
Van Den Bosch had setting problems all weekend and in Race 2 chose a set-up that didn't hit the mark as the Frenchman would have liked. He closed out the fraction in 5th and finished 3rd on the day. Lazzarini took off well and maintained 3rd place behind Chareyre and Hiemer during the first part of the race. He was then passed by Belgian Eddy Seel (Suzuki) after a slip in the unpaved section. Seel finished 4th, once again ahead of the Italian riders. In the Italian section, Lazzarini moved into the double-digits with 100 points. Another Aprilia conquered third place in the championship: Girolami, who finished 7th overall in Latina's Race 2. S2 Class: At the start of Race 1, Iddon took off in the pole but was surprised by Adrien Chareyre (Husqvarna) and fell back to second where he remained until he reached the checkered flag. The British Aprilia driver marked the fastest lap time of the race with a 1:19.462. It was 4th place for Minutilli who finished one position ahead of Beltrami who had mounted a solid comeback from 8th place.
The start of Race 2 saw a group of riders fall at the start. Among them was Iddon who involuntarily dragged Minutilli to the ground. For both riders, the fall spurred comebacks that saw the Englishman finish 8th and 3rd on the day, just behind Minutilli. In this fraction, the top Aprilia rider was Beltrami who crossed the finish line in 4th place. The rider from Team DRC is currently 4th in the Italian classification.
“All that was missing was a victory – commented Ennio Marchesin at the end of the race, the team manager of Aprilia Off Road – but overall our riders raced well. Beyond an Italian round, today seemed to be the second round of World Championship, with the race rhythm and array of teams and riders”.
