The Andorra Grand Prix, the high altitude Supermoto, was held at 2,400 meters at Pas de la Casa Grandvalira. There was suggestive scenery but the small and treacherous track made it difficult to find alternative trajectories for passing. “No room for mistakes” was the message given to the riders by Ennio Marchesin, the director of Aprilia Off Road racing.
The tricky track demanded that the official S1 riders heed Marchesin's warning. Both climbed atop the day's podium as Ivan Lazzarini (Aprilia SXV 4.5/Team DRC Supermoto) finished second ahead of Thierry Van Den Bosch (Aprilia SXV 4.5/Team DRC Supermoto). Lazzarini placed third in both heats while Van Den Bosch finished second in the first heat and fourth in the last.
Both Lazzarini and Van Den Bosch gained four championship points on the German Bernd Hiemer, who currently leads the series. Van Den Bosch particularly benefited from the outcome since he still needs to make up 14 points in these two final races (where 100 points are up for grabs) in order to move into first place. The optimal performance of the two official riders allowed Aprilia to further consolidate its lead in the category reserved to Constructors; with 261 points ahead of Ktm's 238 and Husqvarna's 213.
Missing in the S2 was Massimo Beltrami (Aprilia SXV 5.5/Team DRC Supermoto) who is still recovering from the fracture to his left radius and ulna that occurred while training in Busca (he will likely be back for Greece). Christian Iddon (Aprilia SXV 5.5/Team PMR H20) came back to fight for the podium; finishing 4th in both heats and clocking in times similar to those of the top riders. It was a heartbreaking race for Luca Minutilli (Aprilia SXV 5.5/Team PMR H20) who competed with a swollen hand that was bruised in practice on the eve of the Andorra Grand Prix. Minutilli finished 8th in Race 1 and 13th in Race 2, gritting his teeth through the pain and thus honoring his world engagement.
